Huge rise in passengers 'a big strain on trams'

TRAMS in Salford are becoming 'too crowded' and 'uncomfortable' after a huge rise in the number of passengers, a councillor claims.

Coun Paul Heilbron suggested Sunday services to Eccles and Media City are 'failing, though transport bosses insist there is still plenty of capacity.

Speaking at a full council meeting last week, the Salford Quays representative claimed passenger numbers had risen by 25 per cent and occupancy on trams 'regularly runs between 85 to 90 per cent. As a result, waiting times have also gone up 'by around ten minutes, according to Coun Heilbron.

"These numbers tell us our trams are becoming too crowded, which is not comfortable for our community.
