A YOUNG funeral director is hoping to fix a sacred space that serves the "entire Muslim community.

- By PAUL MCAULEY

Abdulwase Sufian, from Lodge Lane, said his mosque is struggling to cope with the demand for burials with the place of worship's current facilities.

The 21-year-old works at Liverpool's central mosque, Al-Rahma. Located on Hatherley Street, in Toxteth, it is said to be the main place of worship for the city's Muslim community. While Abdulwase appreciates the masjid's popularity, he said, with this comes a host of challenges.

He told the ECHO: "We've been ongoing for the past ten years now. There are around 40,000 Muslims, likely more, in Liverpool, and most of these come to us for funerals. Families from further afield even come to us. We work with Muslims from Rochdale, Wirral, St Helens and the Sefton ward.
