Police chief asks public for views on tax bill

POLICE and crime commissioner (PCC) Rupert Matthews is asking the public for their views on increasing the police precept in council tax bills.

- By STAFF REPORTER

The PCC, pictured, said he is awaiting announcements from government on funding, but he has launched a public survey seeking views on contributions.

"My budget has to pay for a lot more than just police services - such as crime prevention and support for victims of crime," Mr Matthews said.

"I believe we need to think outside the box to determine what will have the greatest impact on public safety.

"To date, the government has not told me how much funding I will receive.

"There is a real danger it may seek to put pressure on PCCs to use local taxation to plug the black hole caused by lack of government funding.
