UK's net zero law explained - just what are our legal commitments?

The UK's net zero law, introduced in 2019, legally commits the country to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.

This means the UK must balance the amount of greenhouse gases it emits with the amount it removes from the atmosphere, effectively ending its contribution to climate change.
This target amended the Climate Change Act 2008, which originally aimed for an 80 per cent reduction in emissions from 1990 levels.
