They were the unsung heroes of the Second World War, playing a key role in gathering the intelligence Allied forces needed to take on the Nazi army - but so far their sacrifice has gone unmarked.

MP backs campaign to give unsung flying heroes of the war a fitting memorial

However, a Lancashire MP has played a key role in moving forward plans for a memorial for the men and women of the RAF’s Photographic Reconnaissance Units (PRU).

Last month in the House of Commons, Veterans Minister Al Carns MP confirmed plans to recognise the members of units had successfully moved to the planning stage.

The call for a memorial - which has been spearheaded by the Spitfire AA810 Project - has enjoyed significant political backing, with more than 200 MPs from eight different parties supporting the memorial campaign.

Among them is Chorley MP - and Speaker of the House of Commons - Sir Lindsay Hoyle.

Two men from Sir Lindsay’s constituency would be among the names on the memorial when it is completed.

While the PRU had many different nationalities serving in it, it was still made up predominantly by servicemen from throughout the United Kingdom, including Donald Higson, from Withnell Fold, and William Dennis Warburton, from Chorley.
