Every day dinner time at the till is like an new adventure
Lancashire Evening Post
|October 02, 2025
I can't wait for dinner at the place where I work because it means I get to chat to till man.
He-this employee who works the till - is a young fella who is possibly the most intriguing/mad human I've encountered.
He is slightly scary in a way I can't quite put my finger on. It's not his appearance - he's not scruffy or unkempt; indeed he has neat swept back hair, wears round glasses and is clean shaven - more because he is incredibly serious and looks at you with the same intensity a scientist might before dissecting a guinea pig and removing it's heart. He's the kind of guy who, outside of work, may or may not be a serial killer and I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if one evening I'm watching the news and his mug shot appears on screen as the presenter says, 'detectives are urgently seeking this man, who was the last person to see 21-year-old Lucy before she disappeared' and I'll turn to Mrs Canavan and say, "blimey, he served me poached egg on toast this morning."
Because a few months back I was one day in a good mood and quite chatty towards him, he's taken a real liking to me and always engages me in conversation, which is wonderful because you never quite know what it's going to be about.
For example, as I skipped down to the canteen yesterday to purchase a jacket potato with salad and coleslaw (they call it 'slaw in our canteen to which I like to point out this is Manchester not New York), I could see him out of the corner of my eye stiffen slightly as I walked in, clearly happy to see me as it meant he would get chance to have a chat.
