Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, recognized for her role in uniting a once-fractured opposition movement and advocating for democracy in a nation long mired in political and economic turmoil.
The Nobel committee's decision to honor Machado comes in a year when global attention on the prize was amplified by U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated public claims that he deserves the accolade.
Announcing the award in Oslo on Friday, Jorgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, described Machado as a "key, unifying figure in a political opposition that was once deeply divided - an opposition that found common ground in the demand for free elections and representative government."
