Hayes excited by biggest challenge yet against mighty Ballygunner

- By BRENDAN FURLONG

IT'S the battle between the tried and tested against newcomers on the Championship block.

Waterford and Munster champions Ballygunner will aim to move a step closer towards winning a second All-Ireland title, while St Martin's will be seeking a first appearance in a final when the two juggernauts clash at Semple Stadium today.

St Martin's manager Daithi Hayes has a huge appreciation of what is coming his side's way, and is determinedly putting the highs of their glorious Leinster campaign behind them to make the ultimate decider.

"When you get to an All-Ireland semifinal there's going to be no weaknesses in any of the teams, and Ballygunner certainly don't have any of those," he said.

"If you look at the names on their teamsheet, the Mahonys (Philip, Michael, Pauric and Kevin), Dessie Hutchinson, Peter Hogan, Patrick Fitzgerald, they are all top-class hurlers, really strong, know their system and what they're doing," added Hayes.

"But we haven't shirked a challenge this year. Today will be no exception," said Hayes.

It was widely anticipated that Ballygunner would coast through their own county championship.
