I HAPPENED to be in the best place when McGregor was launching his rant against this paper: out of the country.

I was in Berlin, a city where the threads of many stories from 2025's summer of discontent seem to connect.

It's a city with a long memory, littered with reminders and warnings of how quickly democracy dies, and fascism rises. At its moving memorial to the Holocaust it is impossible now not to also think of Netanyahu's final solution of turning Gaza City into a vast necropolis.

Berlin also knows a thing or two about walls. And about how they come tumbling down.
