Cork legend Val: Social media is clueing up Gen Z on fitness
CORK legend Val Mulcahy says kids are far more knowledgeable about fitness and nutrition these days thanks to social media.
However, the PE teacher and 10-time All-Ireland winning star makes sure to caution her students about being careful where they get their tips and advice.
Content creators and influencers use popular apps such as Instagram and TikTok to share training tips and nutritional information.
It means many kids who pass through her classes are more aware than ever about issues that can come up in the new PE Leaving Cert curriculum.
"I do feel it's either one extreme or another. You are either really into your fitness or you are not at all. There is very little in between," Mulcahy told Fitter Happer.
"In terms of understanding what's going on in the gym and different exercises, maybe a lot of that comes from exposure on the internet and Instagram, and different influencers.
"I do think a big habit now is going to the gym. Thankfully strong is the new skinny. It's about being strong; lean but strong. People take great pride in their appearance.
