Derry star gets the green light to shine in American football

- KARL O'KANE

JUDE McATAMNEY has become the first Irishman in four decades to be elevated to an NFL first team roster.

The Derry man joined the 53-strong New York Giants squad after playing in three successive NFL games.

Dubliner Neil O'Donoghue was the last Irish player to make a roster, back in 1985 with the St. Louis Cardinals.

McAtamney (25) was elevated three times from the practice squad due to a groin injury to regular kicker Graham Gano. It is unclear how long Gano will be sidelined for.

Under NFL rules a player can't be elevated for a fourth time and instead has to be signed to the clubs roster.
