Hundreds flee as deadly fires threaten resort

WILDFIRES are threatening to engulf another tourist resort in Turkey and are forcing residents to flee their homes.

Bursa, a favourite with holidaymakers, has been surrounded by fires described by a local politician as “an apocalypse”, and more than 1,700 people have been evacuated.

Dozens of severe wildfires have hit the country since late June.

Two provinces in the west of the nation, Izmir and Bilecik, were declared disaster areas on Friday.

Fourteen people have died in recent weeks, including 10 rescue volunteers and forestry workers killed on Wednesday in a fire in Eskisehir, also in western Turkey.
