Some backbenchers have been broken ranks and have spoke out about Mr Martin's leadership.

Among them is TD Malcolm Byrne who said there is “frustration” in the party as colleagues don't feel listened to.

The Taoiseach said it’s “unfair” to say he isn't listening to backbenchers, and added: “Iam meeting backbenchers the last couple of weeks.

“I always engage with back-benchers and my door is always open to people if they want to engage and discuss.
