Shamed hurler cleans 20 cells a day behind bars in Mountjoy

- BY JOHN KIERANS

CANCER conman DJ Carey is cleaning up to 20 jail cells a day behind bars and has very little contact with other inmates, we can reveal.

The GAA legend has swapped his hurley for a mop as he gets down and dirty in Mountjoy Prison.

Carey’s job is to clean all the cells in an area known as the Committal Base where prisoners are kept on their first night after being sent to jail by the courts.

They are held there overnight before being transferred to another part of Mountjoy where they will serve their sentence.

DJ then comes in the next morning after his breakfast and gets each of the 20 cells in the area spick and span for the next new inmate coming in. He is being detained in a cell on his own in the committal area.

The disgraced All-Ireland medal winner is paid between €1.70 to €2.20 a day as a gratuity for his work. This income can then be used to buy goods in the prison tuck shop.
