IRELAND has been asked to play a role in US President Donald Trump's proposed “board of peace” for Gaza.

- BY CIARA O'LOUGHLIN

According to The White House, the board would help support effective governance and “the delivery of best-in-class services that advance peace, stability, and prosperity for the people of Gaza” and would play an “essential role” in fulfilling all 20 points of Trump's peace plan.

Foreign Affairs Minister Helen McEntee said this plan was discussed at a meeting of EU ambassadors on Sunday, but Ireland would have to give the invitation a “careful consideration”.

She said: “Ireland has received an invitation from the United States to participate in the proposed Board of Peace.

“We will need to give this careful consideration. In doing so, we will coordinate closely with our EU and wider European partners.
