Ireland's top 5 places for a splash revealed

- BY CIARA O'LOUGHLIN

THE Forty Foot and Vico Baths in Dublin might be the most well-known swimming spots, but neither have won the prestigious title of Ireland's favourite sea swimming location.

Blackrock Beach in Galway was given the coveted award, and with its Blue Flag status and iconic diving board, it’s no wonder the beach is loved by so many.

Popular all year round with tourists, it’s also a regular haunt of local swim clubs.

A survey by The Lagoon Activity Centre in Rosscarbery, Co Cork, found that the second best spot is Banna Beach in Kerry. It based the list on Google Trends data over the past five years as well as Instagram hashtags.

SUNSETS

Another Blue Flag winner, the 8km long sandy beach boasts stunning sunsets, clean waters and famous Kerry scenery.

While The Forty Foot and Vico Baths were not the winners, the Dublin swimming locations made the list’s top five.

Located in Sandycove, the Forty Foot came in third place. A legendary spot that has featured on the screen, it’s packed out with sea swimmers even in winter.

It boasts loyal cold-water swimmers but is also perfect for beginners who want to immerse themselves in the water before they change their mind.
