Powell: Time to axe Captain's Challenge
Hull Daily Mail
|July 08, 2025
DARYL Powell says it's time for the Captain's Challenge to be ditched after fans started slow hand-clapping while awaiting a decision.
-
Wakefield Trinity attracted their biggest home crowd in 12 years when 8,625 turned up to watch them wallop Catalan Dragons 44-6 on Saturday.
But Powell fears fans will soon get disillusioned with the sport if they have to continue suffering interminably long waits for the video referee to make a decision at Captain's Challenge time.
The system, whereby during a stoppage in play by the ref, a team’s captain has 10 seconds to decide whether to challenge the decision, was only brought into Super League this season. Video referees are asked for a second opinion but if the on-field referee is proven correct, the side has no more challenges.
