Bulldozer parked forever: Oppn; BJP hails judgment

Opposition leaders on Wednesday welcomed the Supreme Court verdict on bulldozer action, and took swipes at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying the top court has "parked the bulldozer in the garage forever".

The BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government, which was at the receiving end of most criticism from opposition parties, also hailed the top court's verdict and said it will help curb organised crime and instill a fear of legal consequences among criminals.

The UP government also clarified that it was not part of the case in which the apex court delivered the verdict.

In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court, while equating "bulldozer justice" with a lawless state of affairs where might is right, laid down nationwide guidelines and said no property should be demolished without a prior show cause notice and the affected must be given 15 days to respond.

"With the Supreme Court's decision, the bulldozer has been parked in the garage forever. There can be no bigger comment than what the Supreme Court said," Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said.
