BJP leader dies after protest in Bihar; political row erupts

A 46-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader died on Thursday during a protest against the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government and deputy chief minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, with the Opposition alleging that he was killed in the police lathi-charge on the protesters. The police and doctors, however, said that the cause of his death was still unclear.
The BJP had planned to hold a march till the state assembly in Patna to protest against the state's teacher recruitment policy and Tejashwi after he was named by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the land-for-job case charge sheet. They were, however, stopped a few kilometers away from the Vidhan Sabha by the police, which resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas shell firing to disperse the protesters.
The BJP alleged that Vijay Kumar Singh, general secretary of BJP's Jehanabad unit, succumbed to injuries he suffered during the police action. BJP spokesperson Prem Ranjan Patel said another party leader, Neena Jha, is in critical condition after she sustained head injuries in the clash.
"Several others are undergoing treatment," he said. The party has announced 10 lakh ex-gratia to the next kin of the deceased.
