Ex-MLA Detained During Protest for Strict Land Law Outside House

Dehradun police detained former Ghanshali MLA Bhim Lal Arya and his supporters for staging a protest in front of the Uttarakhand assembly during the budget session.

When Arya and his supporters started shouting slogans for the implementation of a strict land law, they were put into a police vehicle and taken to the Nehru Colony police station from where they were shifted to police lines.

Arya said the agenda decided by the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) for three days of the budget session doesn't mention tabling of the land law bill, and clears the intention of the Dhami government.

He said he submitted a memorandum of demands to the chief minister's office but the government paid no heed to it, prompting him to stage a protest outside the assembly.

"The people of Uttarakhand fought for statehood with great sacrifice, yet they continue to struggle for their rightful entitlements even after 25 years of the state's formation. There is a strong demand for a strict land law to be implemented in the state, and for 1950 to be declared as the cut-off year for domicile eligibility," he said.
