January 23, 2026

The European Union has extended the suspension of preferential trade benefits for India and two other nations under its Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) across key industries such as textiles, chemicals, plastics, iron and steel, machinery and electrical goods.

The development comes just weeks before India and the EU are expected to announce the closure of free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations on January 27. A commerce ministry spokesperson said the issue is old, with GSP phased out gradually since 2016.
