Gill’s injury is not a workload issue: Morkel

An official update on the extent of the India captain's injury is expected on Sunday, a team official said.

Gill, 26, was three balls old into his innings, having coming in at the fall of Washington Sundar's wicket, when a neck spasm ruled out further participation in the day's play.

That happened in the fifth ball of the 35th over of India's innings and when Gill had swept off-spinner Simon Harmer for four, his first scoring shot. Television footage had shown Gill telling players and staff that he had woken up with a neck sprain.

"Bad timing," said Morne Morkel, India's bowling coach. "It was just unfortunate this morning that he woke up with a stiff neck he carried into the day which was crucial for us."
