Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday, calling its recent conduct “unfortunate” and “unprecedented in independent India.”

Recent conduct of ECI unfortunate: Gehlot

Speaking to the media, Gehlot said, “The direction in which this country is heading — or will head —is evident from the way Congress leaders have been treated. In my opinion, this is perhaps the first time in history, post-independence, that such behavior has been witnessed from the ECI— whether by the chairman, members, or whoever was responsible. I believe it’s very unfortunate.”

He said that even when political leaders had disagreements with the ECI in the past, the Commission maintained a dignified and respectful stance. “Listening patiently to all political parties and voters is their duty. The ECI is a highly credible institution on which the entire electoral process depends. But the recent conduct has been shocking—I don’t even know what words to use to express my criticism,” he added.
