The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Sunday commenced the whitewashing of the outer wall of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh in line with the Allahabad high court order, an advocate of the mosque committee said.

MEERUT:

The dispute stems from a claim that the mosque was built after demolishing a historic temple, Harihar Temple. It gained momentum after violence erupted during the court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid on November 24, 2024. Four people lost their lives in clashes that broke out over claims that the mosque was built on the site of a Hindu temple. Since then, law enforcement agencies have maintained strict surveillance around the mosque and its surrounding areas.
