Baya river to be dredged to minimise flood risk

Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Monday said that Baya river would be dredged to minimise the impact of floods in eight blocks of Vaishali and adjoining districts in the state.

The CM made this announcement during the Pragati Yatra at Vaishali, where he also laid the foundation stones and inaugurated as many as 344 development schemes, worth ₹276.80 crore. This includes the inauguration of 118 schemes at a cost of ₹113.37 crore and foundation stone laying of 226 schemes costing ₹163.43 crore.

Baya river, which flows through three districts, meets Ganga at Mahnar in Vaishali.

On the occasion, the CM also said that Braila lake, a wetland spread in about 1.92 square kilometre under Patepur block of Vaishali, would be developed and beautified to draw tourists and promote fisheries. Established as a protected area in 1997, the wetland is home to about 59 species of migratory birds and 106 varieties of local avifauna.
