India open with Kishan, Varma shines on return

Ahead of starting their title defence in the T20 World Cup, India served another warning to their opponents with a dazzling batting display in their warm-up game against a strong South Africa side at the Dr D Y Patil Stadium, here on Wednesday.

Powering to a total of 240/5, India had a highly satisfying outing with their batters ticking most of the boxes.

In a clear indication of their playing XI for the World Cup, India chose to open with Ishan Kishan in place of Sanju Samson.

The pocket dynamo continued his sizzling form and justified his selection with a belligerent 20-ball 53. The returning Tilak Varma proved he is in fine touch with an impressive 19-ball 45, all-rounder ‘Axar Patel also spent quality time at the crease during an unbeaten 35 (23 balls) while the inform players, opener Abhishek Sharma (24/18b), captain Suryakumar ‘Yadav (30/16b) and Hardik Pandya (30/10b) helped themselves to useful practice.

Opening batter Abhishek has been the flavour of the season for his swashbuckling playing style. For once, another batter made him look slow.

The spectators had packed the stands with the expectations of fireworks from Abhishek’s blade.
