Modi to address Asean summit virtually

India and Malaysia announced on Thursday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join the Asean-India Summit virtually, not travelling to the regional gathering in Kuala Lumpur due to scheduling and other issues, and that external affairs minister S Jaishankar would represent the country at several key meetings.

The summit was seen in some quarters as a possible venue for a face-to-face meeting between PM Modi and US President Donald ‘Trump, with the two countries still engaged in trade talks.

The PM's decision to join the summit virtually was announced ‘on social media by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Modi, who was earlier expected to travel to Kuala
