DEHRADUN: Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday launched the "Aapda Sakhi Yojana" on the lines of "Aapda Mitra Yojana" wherein he said women volunteers will be trained in early warning systems, first aid, relief and rescue operations, and psychological support during inclement weather conditions.

Addressing the "Monsoon 2025: Preparedness" workshop organised by the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority in Dehradun to take stock of monsoon preparedness, Dhami said the scheme will empower women and further strengthen community participation in disaster management.

Dhami said the monsoon workshop is a significant step in the direction of disaster preparedness and will help tackle upcoming challenges effectively and added that Uttarakhand is a disaster-prone state, and lessons must be learnt from past natural calamities.

"While natural disasters cannot be avoided, prompt response, alertness, and coordinated relief efforts can significantly reduce the loss of life and property. For this, coordination among departments and a sensitive, vigilant approach is crucial," he said.

Dhami said that disaster management is a collective responsibility of all departments, and also requires active public participation.

"No government effort can be fully effective unless the society is aware, trained, and alert. Local residents are the first responders during any disaster, which makes it essential to train disaster management committees at the village level, women's and youth groups, voluntary organizations, and institutions like the Red Cross," he said.

In Bihar, the INDIA bloc fights a perception battle

There's also a third player that is keenly watched — the Jan Suraaj Party, founded by pollster Prashant Kishor, who may emerge as a kingmaker.
