At least three people were killed and more than 50 local residents were admitted to hospital after toxic nitrogen gas leaked from a factory, which was running illegally, in Beawar city late on Monday night, officials aware of the matter said on Tuesday, adding that the deceased included the 47-year-old owner of the factory.
JAIPUR:
"The incident took place at around 10.30 pm on Monday night when the regulator of a nitrogen tank on the factory premises leaked, following which the gas spread in the vicinity. We are yet not sure how far it has spread. Probe into the matter is on," said Beawar superintendent of police (SP) Shyam Singh.
Police said that the factory is located in a populated area at Badhia in Beawar and therefore, many local people came in contact with the gas. "At least 53 people either fainted or suffered burning sensation in their eyes, following which they were rushed to the hospital," said the SP.
Meanwhile, upon receiving the information, the owner of the factory, Sunil Singhal, reached the spot immediately to fix the regulator and stop the leakage. "He successfully fixed the regulator. However, soon he fainted on the spot, following which he was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival," added Singh.
