India's unemployment rate eases to 5.2% in July

August 19, 2025

India’s unemployment rate was 5.2% in July 2025 and 5.4% in the quarter between April and June 2025, according to latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on Monday. Whether or not these numbers signify an improvement in the labour market, however, is difficult to say, because comparable data from a year ago is not available.

- Abhishek Jha

At 5.2%, the July 2025 unemployment rate was at a three-month low on a sequential basis.

The rural and urban unemployment rates were 4.4% and 7.2%. While the unemployment rate in rural areas is at its lowest since April, in urban areas it is the highest since April. Because the NSO has only started releasing monthly labour market numbers from April 2025, an annual comparison - that would address the seasonality in the data ~ is not possible.
