In trade twist for Trump, court outlaws his tariffs

A New York federal court on Wednesday blocked President Donald Trump from imposing sweeping tariffs on imports under an emergency-powers law, swiftly throwing into doubt Trump's signature set of economic policies that have rattled global financial markets and frustrated trade partners.

The ruling from a three-judge panel at the US Court of International Trade came after several lawsuits arguing Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs exceeded his authority and left trade policy dependent on his whims.

US commerce secretary Howard W Lutnick had in a court submission said any ruling impeding Donald Trump's use of emergency powers to invoke tariffs would imperil foreign policy arrangements across the world, including the May 10 ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

India dismissed the claims again on Thursday and said trade hadn't figured at all recently between the two countries.
