India's wholesale inflation, as measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), rose to 2.4% in December, up from 1.9% in November, according to data released by the Union ministry of commerce and industry on Tuesday.

NEW DELHI:

Sequentially, or on a month-on-month basis, the WPI print contracted by 0.4%, making it the second consecutive month of contraction.

The rise in the December WPI reading was mainly due to adverse base effect; WPI recorded a contraction of 5.2% in December 2023. The latest number was also broadly in line with analyst estimates. A Bloomberg poll of economists projected this number at 2.2%.
