Renaming districts a state subject, says DKS

The Union government refused approval for the Karnataka government's proposal to rename Ramanagara as Bengaluru South, revenue minister Krishna Byregowda confirmed on Thursday, adding that while the state submitted the proposal following a cabinet decision, the centre's response was non-committal.

"The response we received was not positive. The Centre did not provide a specific reason for its refusal but simply stated that the state government need not proceed with the renaming exercise for the time being," Byregowda said.

The renaming proposal gained momentum ahead of the Channapatna by-election, drawing opposition from the BJP-JD(S) alliance. The move comes nearly two decades after Kumaraswamy's government carved out Ramanagara district from Bengaluru Rural in 2007. Historically, the region was part of Bengaluru district before being included in Bengaluru Rural in 1986.
