Cong Leaders Stage Protest on Boats Against Centre's Deep-Sea Mining Plan

The opposition Congress in Kerala held a protest on boats in the high seas off the coast in Alappuzha district on Saturday against the Centre's decision to permit deep-sea mining off the state's coast.

The protest was led by AICC general secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal and participated by a large number of fishermen, party leaders, and workers.
The protesters travelled 15 nautical miles into the high seas, shouting slogans against the Centre and its decision, according to video clippings released by the Congress.
Speaking during the protest, Venugopal demanded that the Centre completely scrap the deep-sea mining proposal, claiming it would destroy the livelihoods of thousands of fisherfolk in many coastal districts of Kerala, a statement issued by the party said.
