Beed Cops Get New Name Plates Without Surnames To Curb Bias

CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: Police officers in Beed district of Maharashtra will get new name plates without their surnames — both for office desks as well as to wear on uniforms — in an attempt to curb caste-based discrimination, officers familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

A brainchild of Beed superintendent of police (SP) Navneet Kanwat — who had earlier asked all officers in the district police force to address each other only by their first names, avoiding last names that often reveal caste identities — the latest initiative comes as a reminder for personnel to serve the people, without bias and discrimination, an officer said, requesting anonymity.
