At least six patients died due to suffocation after a massive fire broke out at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Rajasthan government-run Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital’s trauma centre in Jaipur late on Sunday night, officials said on Monday, adding that the hospital superintendent and the nodal officer of the trauma centre have been removed from their posts.

JAIPUR: A 25-year-old Joginder Singh sat in a corner of an ICU on the second floor of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital’s trauma centre on Sunday night as he waited eagerly for the morning. His mother, Rukmani Kaur (50), was supposed to be discharged after a five-day-long treatment following an accident.
In a matter of minutes, however, everything changed.
The fire broke out in a store room of the ICU at the largest government hospital in the state.
