Munnar to get responsible tourism destination tag
Gulf Today
|July 06, 2025
Kerala has embarked on an ambitious initiative to transform Munnar, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state with around 1.2 million tourists (based on hotel occupancy) visiting it annually, into a globally recognized Responsible Tourism Destination by 2025.
The declaration to this effect is likely to take place towards the end of December, according to official sources.
The project aims to redefine travel through sustainability, inclusivity, and environmental protection and focuses on implementing eco-friendly practices, including eliminating single-use plastics, promoting net-zero carbon tourism, empowering local communities, especially women.
Plans are also afoot to integrate village-based experiences into mainstream tourism.
