Waar George gemiddeld sowat 750 mm reën per jaar ontvang, staan die totaal op net 500 mm, met 'n skamele 100 mm sedert Julie.

Vir die winter - tradisioneel die seisoen waarin die damme moet vol loop - was daar eenvoudig nie genoeg reën nie.

"Ons is geknel," sê Bossie Terblanche, voorsitter van die Outeniqualand-boerevereniging. "Ons het maar 75 mm oor vyf maande gehad. Dis net nie genoeg om die damme te dra nie, en nou gaan ons die somer in sonder water."
