In India, the Indian Journal of Rheumatology reports a prevalence of approximately 0.75%, impacting lakhs of people. This condition often targets smaller joints—hands, feet, wrists, and elbows—causing swelling and discomfort. When the elbow is affected, the consequences can significantly disrupt daily routines, making it a pressing concern for those affected.

THE DISTINCT IMPACT OF ELBOW INVOLVEMENT

The elbow plays an essential role in connecting the hand to the body, enabling everyday movements like eating or dressing. In RA, this joint can suffer considerable damage, ranging from gradual wear to complete immobility, a state known as ankylosis. This loss of function is more than a physical limitation—it affects patients emotionally, as simple pleasures like holding a cup or greeting a friend become difficult. The Arthritis Foundation highlights that elbow damage is a major contributor to disability in severe RA cases, underscoring its unique significance. When both elbows are involved, the challenge intensifies, often leaving individuals reliant on others for basic tasks.
