500 places to be created with prison expansion

THE prison in Newton Abbot is set to expand by 40% as the Government goes ahead with the largest prison building programme in decades.

Work has started on a 500-place expansion at HMP Channings Wood, with two new four-storey cell-blocks.
The new cells will be in service by the end of 2027.
The project will also include the construction of a new jobs and education workshop to give prisoners the skills they need to secure jobs on their release.
The development is part of the Government's plan to create 14,000 additional prison places by 2031 - with 2,500 of these added since last July.
