Scores dead after Israel strikes Gaza safe zone

AN ISRAELI strike on a Gaza humanitarian safe zone for displaced civilians killed at least 40 people and wounded 60 others today, according to Palestinian officials.
Israel said it had targeted "significant" Hamas militants in a strike on a command centre in the safe zone and had worked to avoid civilian casualties.
The Hamas-run Civil Defence authority said it had recovered 40 bodies from the strike in Al-Mawasi, near Khan Younis, after it was struck by at least four missiles. The Gaza civil emergency service said at least 20 tents caught fire, and said the 65 victims included women and children.
