THE gunman who shot dead 19 pupils and two teachers at a Texas elementary school was able to walk in "unobstructed", police have said.
Robb Elementary normally has an armed school safety officer but when Salvador Ramos, 18, arrived on Tuesday "there was not an officer, readily available, armed", Victor Escalon, of the Texas Department of Public Safety, said. He added that the gunman entered through an apparently unlocked door "not confronted by anybody".
Mr Escalon defended the police response amid anger at an apparent delay in tackling the gunman and why he was able to get into the school unchallenged. Ramos was inside the school for more than an hour before he was killed.
