£’77bn rights issue for greener Grid

NATIONAL Grid today launched a £7 billion rights issue to help fund a £60 billion programme of investment over the next five years in a major green energy push.
The network giant will spend £23 billion in the UK on energy transmission systems, to connect offshore wind farms to the rest of the grid. It says this will help it to create "critical infrastructure required to enable the energy transition and a decarbonised electricity network in the 2030s".
A further £8 billion will go towards "asset replacement, reinforcement and new connections", which will support electric vehicles and heat pumps. The remainder of the money will be spent in the US.
