Tourist town pub shuts doors after 'standards slip'
Derby Telegraph
|December 16, 2025
A LARGE Derbyshire pub and hotel has closed its doors and will be reclaimed by its brewery following concerns over “ongoing deterioration” in its standards.
Derby's Conservative group leader, Steve Hassall, found himself at the heart of a pub-shaped problem outside the city’s boundary after being contacted by customers who had a poor experience at The Greyhound in Cromford.
The Admiral Taverns-owned pub is reported to have let its standards and reliability slip over the past year under its new management, and now Admiral says the current operator has left their position and the pub has been closed. The hunt for a new operator is under way.
Speaking of residents’ concerns, Cllr Hassall said: “I’ve heard from people who have turned up and the pub and hotel has been closed, which of course drives people away from the village and somewhat tarnishes its reputation.
“But we've also heard from people who've said the rooms in the hotel are tired and outdated, with wallpaper hanging off the walls and damp smells all around the place.”
A number of poor reviews have also been left online for The Greyhound, with four out of the last 10 giving a score of just 2/5 or lower.
