There and back again...a year as Amber Valley's MP
Derby Telegraph
|August 08, 2025
HEY say a week is a long time in politics - if that's true, I can hardly believe how quickly the past year has flown by.
-

Standing up to make my maiden speech in Parliament was one of the most nerve-wracking moments of my life, but also one of my proudest. That day, I promised to use my voice for the people of Amber Valley.
Since then, I’ve kept that promise by fighting for parents and families struggling with inadequate SEND provision, demanding urgent reforms to a justice system where 80% of offenders reoffend, pressing for more NHS dentists, championing better dementia care, and calling for action to tackle antisocial behaviour so our streets feel safer.
One of my biggest milestones came just before Parliament broke for summer recess. Four years to the day after the shocking disorder at the Euro 2020 final at Wembley, my Private Member's Bill - the Unauthorised Entry to Football Matches Bill - passed into law.
This new legislation makes it a criminal offence to enter a football match without a ticket, commonly known as tailgating.
