Serious assault leaves man in hospital and locals ruing decline of 'once great town'

ILKESTON residents say they are scared to go out following a 'serious assault' in the town centre that left a man in hospital with serious injuries.

Police were called to reports of an incident in the town's Market Place at 2.10am on Saturday.

Derbyshire police said a man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries following the incident. The area was cordoned off for some time.

Pedestrians were advised of disruption and told to “take alternative routes where possible,” as businesses inside of the cordon remain closed.

Officers remained in the area and directed people away from the cordon, which blocked access through the town’s Market Place.

Local residents spoke of their concerns over the latest incident in the town, with some ruing the decline of the ‘once great’ town centre.
