Loving nurse who helped evacuees is remembered both here and across the pond

A BELOVED grandmother who grew up in Derbyshire before starting a new life in the US has been fondly remembered following her death last month.

Sheila Jeane Murphy was born in Barrow-on-Soar, Leicestershire, in 1928, before moving to Cromford, where she spent most of her childhood.

Mrs Murphy (née Birch) was a teenager during The Blitz in the Second World War, and her family helped care for children evacuated from London to Derbyshire.

She went on to work as a nurse in Derby, living in Littleover and Allestree, before she met her would-be husband, Guy.
