THE name Llewellynn Jewitt may not mean too much to many people, but going back in history, Mr Jewitt was a prominent topographical writer and illustrator - and the early founder of this newspaper.

Llewellynn Jewitt came to Derby in 1853 and was for a long time curator and secretary of the Town and County Museum, now the Derby Museum and Art gallery Jewitt spent may years of his life in this area, getting married in Derby and living at Winster Hall in the Peak District and in Duffield

He was the youngest son of Arthur Jewitt and was born at Kimberworth, near Rotherham, on November 24, 1816. His family history was heavily involved in the cutlery trade.

Two years after his birth his family went to live in Duffield, and they remained in that village until 1838.

It was at Duffield that Mr Jewitt commenced his literary career, his contributions being to the Youth's Magazine, The Literary World and Mirror, and the Sunday Magazine.
