Need job to be flexible

Dear James, I’M going through a divorce and hoping to get full custody of my kids.

It’s been an emotional time, but one I can hopefully see the end of soon.

To be a single dad, I'll need more flexible working hours. I work as a van driver for a big haulage firm, but that tends to be in the daytime. How do I raise this with my employer?

I don’t want them to think I’m not committed to the company, as I am up for promotion next year. My boss hasn’t been very sympathetic to workers’ personal issues in the past.
