SCIENTISTS don't necessarily believe witnesses are lying when they think they've seen the Loch Ness Monster, as the Daily Star revealed yesterday. Sometimes it is tricky to separate the fact from the fiction.

Something fishy: The first recorded "sighting" was in 565 AD, when Saint Columba, an Irish monk, stumbled on the funeral of a man attacked by a creature in the River Ness. The beast later emerged from the loch but, having made the sign of the cross, the religious figure basically told it to do one.
